While I have resisted getting a Kindle, due to some of its limitations, I think the new Kindle DX
may just fill the gap. It can show the NY Times like a newspaper, and also has native PDF support.
All it needs is a full-fledge web browser and color, and it will dominate the hardware market. I wonder if that is next?
