@JeffreyKeefer It’s more of an emergent sandbox in that much of the game isn’t preprogrammed but arises out of interactions between players.
@JeffreyKeefer It has a very strong community inside/outside the game. It can be played solo or in a way with quests but shines in groups.
@JeffreyKeefer Players can form guilds (called “corporations”) and form alliances of corporations and then coalitions of alliances.
@JeffreyKeefer Players can own and create things in the universe and those things have persistence. There are spies, diplomats, dictators.
@JeffreyKeefer It also has a very strong production and in-game economy, overseen by a real-world economist.
@JeffreyKeefer The tools and infrastructure the players have created to support their endeavours are amazing, well beyond game WoW game mods
@JeffreyKeefer Some people call EVE Online “Spreadsheets in Space” because, like the old-style Hammurabi game, you need resources.
@JeffreyKeefer You need to keep your corporation/alliance members happy. You need to protect or defend yourself. All this needs managing.
@JeffreyKeefer People play in a variety of ways: player-versus-player on a very large scale (thousands in a battle), one-on-one or between.
@JeffreyKeefer Some people only make stuff or acquire resources or manipulate the markets. Some do organised team PvP. Some do quests.
@JeffreyKeefer You can be a pirate, a merchant prince, a dictator, a thief, a spy, a miner, a researcher. These aren’t predefined really.
@JeffreyKeefer You make yourself rather than the game saying it has is class or that class, etc. That’s more of its “emergent sandbox”
@JeffreyKeefer It was one of the first games inducted in MoMA’s permanent video game exhibition a few months ago.
@Eingang @JeffreyKeefer My diss is about EVE, I’m also running a workshop about it at FDG this year: http://t.co/bVduChpb
