Jeffrey’s Twitter Updates for 2011-07-09
- I needed to make a few brief stops along the way, but between major traffic and heavy rain, the trip today was 5 hours. Phew. #
- Now dealing with the same horrible traffic back out of the lincoln Tunnel. #
- Time to off to class. Teaching at Pace U this morning: "Teaching and Learning in Advanced Practice Nursing." I love teaching this course. #
- @naomi_jacobs That may make for an interesting area of study. Just musing; always more to study than time, I suppose. @ANTexperiment #
- @naomi_jacobs Interesting. In some ways it seems @ANTexperiment may like to watch and study rather than participate. #
- @naomi_jacobs I have not found a practical use of the #Scrivener corkboard. I like the concept, but not sure how to operationalize #phdchat #
- @AndreaZellner The challenge is #Scrivener offers an alternative to the many bad habits developed by Word #phdchat #
- @AndreaZellner Yes, the #Scrivener manual is quite well-written #phdchat #
- Every time I think I am getting the hang of #Scrivener I find there is so much more to it and that it is just beyond my grasp #phdchat #
- @naomi_jacobs Ahh, got it. With such an interesting user name as @ANTexperiment, seems too bad the Tweets are private. #
- @savasavasava OK, what did you do? #
- @betsyweber Can appreciate all the hugs I can get! Hope you are well out there in MI. #
- Dragging this morning; went to bed late making wine labels and re-reading the #Scrivener manual. Off to teach in a little while. #
- @savasavasava So, what did you do? #
- @naomi_jacobs Wish could follow the conversation, but the Tweets of @ANTexperiment are blocked. Too bad! #phdchat #
- @christiepooh The Tom Bihn is a little more polished, though the Red Oxx seems more durable with hardier backpack straps and buckles. #
- @christiepooh They are about the same size. #
- @srossmktg I now so hope you find it useful!! #
- @savasavasava I wish that were the case. Firefox just reopens as if nothing happened. Seems like a sneaky politician. #
- @torresk Perhaps in one of my clean-ups I accidentally removed? Alas, with red-face . . . #
- @torresk Wondered why I had not seen you around recently, and just noticed I was not following you. Not sure how that happened. #
- @torresk I can pretend to be Peter if you are Spidy!! BTW, recently saw it on Broadway; interesting though costlier than it should be. #
- @torresk Looks like an interesting event. What is it about? #
- @aeratcliffe Screenshot is very helpful. Think a blog about it will be useful. #Scrivener is a very powerful program, isn't it? #phdchat #
- @betsyweber Thanks!! I hugged them from a distance. #
- @LorettaDonovan You are not along on that one. If only we had better trains in the US . . . #
- @christiepooh Finally decided to keep the Red Oxx; just ordered 6 more accessories. Wait another few days and I will blog with all of them. #
- @christiepooh Yes, I bought both pieces and actually struggled with determining which to keep! #

Jeffrey’s Twitter Updates for 2011-07-08
- Took me 4 hours to get back to #NYC just now due to the F***** Lincoln Tunnel 90 minute inbound delay. #
- @savasavasava It gave me the options, but I do not think you can restore the current open windows, yes? #
- @jenny_wakefield Thanks for the oh-so-gentle reminder about #AERA proposal that is coming due quicker than I can write it! #
- @cambgirl Got it; thanks! @lemness @aeratcliffe #phdchat #
- @torresk I only wish this were the case! Any chance of you being in London for #BERA the first week of September? #
- @EvilSue The #phdchat wiki is http://bit.ly/lOsQrF @nsriazat @PapersGenius #
- @NSRiazat So, in a way it is used to organize, rather than use in any other way? @EvilSue @PapersGenius #phdchat #
- @savasavasava @qui_oui The best response I have heard all day. Alas, the day is still young. #
- @AmandaMichelle Where do you record these keywords, and how do you organize them across papers? #phdchat #
- @srossmktg Ahh, you are framing it as it is distinguished there. Got it. #
- @savasavasava My Firefox just closed, and with it all the tabs. Alas, some tabs were open for 2 weeks, so very difficult to track down. #
- @aeratcliffe I know #Scrivener I am just trying to visualize how you organize it for the lit review. Can you share a screenshot? #phdchat #
- Enough Tweets for one day. Night, Twitterverse. #
- @savasavasava @qui_oui So this is what a Twitter hook-up looks like. Cool. #
- @PapersGenius I get the idea of Twitter Lists, just not the how-to-work-them-in-practice part @NSRiazat @EvilSue #
- @DrGarcia Are there any other sorts of questions? @savasavasava #
- @torresk Alas, I think I am missing you yet again at a conference! #phdchat #
- @savasavasava How help your productivity? #phdchat #
- @NSRiazat I have not been able to figure out any benefits to keeping a Twitter list. How do you use it? @PapersGenius #phdchat #
- @hummingbird604 We will look forward to your words of wisdom, or otherwise! #phdchat #
- Catching up on the #phdchat threads I missed today due to the person cutting the trees outside. What a rich discussion today #phdchat #
- @cambgirl What process do you follow that you find works for you? @Lemness @aeratcliffe #phdchat #
- @aeratcliffe Great method. So, you annotate by writing notes in different #Scrivener documents, not directly into your writing? #phdchat #
- @AmandaMichelle Do you annotate and write after each document, or after a group of them? @lizith @Lemness @aeratcliffe #phdchat #
- @AmandaMichelle I recommend staying away from cliffs, unless you are researching flying, that is @lizith @Lemness @aeratcliffe #phdchat #
- @aeratcliffe How did you develop this process? #phdchat #
- @SarahR_H Excellent; can't wait to see how you navigate them #phdchat #
- @srossmktg My work is neither (though I like them both). I am researching doctoral learning experiences via distance #phdchat #
- @srossmktg I am not sure I understand the distinction you are making, as educational research is richer than those two #phdchat #

Jeffrey’s Twitter Updates for 2011-07-07
- Have to run; tree man. Will catch up later as I have a bunch of follow-up questions!! #phdchat #
- @srossmktg I am social sciences (educational research); I am completely literature based! #phdchat #
- @srossmktg You are humanities-based, and that is what is challenging? #phdchat #
- @aeratcliffe This would make for a great blog post to show how you read and then note / write in #Scrivener #phdchat #
- @SarahR_H YES!!! Short or long, would be helpful #phdchat #
- @srossmktg Some of what is more humanities? #phdchat #
- @lizith Very true; nice to hear of ways others navigate; gives ideas to try as I am reading and reading, though need to focus more #phdchat #
- @aeratcliffe Different text doc for each article, with complete reference in #Papers2 + Manuscripts? #phdchat #
- @lizith @Lemness @aeratcliffe Never occurred to me to work with dozens of PDFs and not annotate but to write immediately #phdchat #
- @aeratcliffe You create different text documents for each article in #Scrivener @lemness #phdchat #
- @SarahR_H You important annotated PDFs in #Scrivener #phdchat #
- @AmandaMichelle I use GoodReader, which now allows you to get files on and off directly in iTunes #phdchat #
- @Lemness @aeratcliffe So, you both seem to write as you read. Do you also notate in the PDFs? #phdchat #
- @Lemness So you would read and article or two and then write a few notes in Word, and continue to expand? #phdchat #
- @JaneDavis13 How do you get that understanding? #phdchat #
- @AmandaMichelle I take notes on the PDFs on my iP*d. I am wondering how people take those notes and then group / organize them #phdchat #
- #AskObama How can you be more persuasive in presenting the facts, as you said with taxes, to those who argue only on evoking emotions? #
- @PatParslow Love it!! #phdchat #
- @aeratcliffe Are you reading PDFs and then making notes in #Scrivener #phdchat #
- @NSRiazat @srossmktg Do you plan to that by reviewing your problem and purpose and questions? #phdchat #
- I am wondering how you handle notes with the literature you read for the lit review. How do you move from taking notes to writing? #phdchat #
- One of my supervisors recommended the text Doing a Literature Review by Chris Hart http://t.co/TuGk4fK – Very helpful text #phdchat #
- Phew, finally able to briefly join #phdchat #
- #askobama What do you mean when you say that your thinking and feelings are "evolving" regarding gay marriage? #
- #askobama How do you manage to stay so calm when there exists so much partisan politics? #
- @alexandraUberVU Thanks for the link; this is great! #
- @SarahR_H Case in point! #phdchat #
- @savasavasava Too funny! #
- @aeratcliffe @Lemness @interactyx Yes, though do not hold your breath #phdchat #
- @savasavasava Context? #
- @lizgloyn You will be fantastic!! 😉 @SapphireSeaLion @lucyclare @mrph2 @jackandhyde @kindjourneys #
- @Lemness @TOPYX I fear one challenge is people are expected to master new technologies on their own time without compensation #phdchat #
- @Lemness @TOPYX Yes, change is scary #phdchat #
- @aeratcliffe @Interactyx However, lots of academic and professional people I know are still terrified of technology #phdchat #
- @aeratcliffe @Interactyx I wish it meant an "e" was no longer needed! #phdchat #
- Alas, my tree will be cut down today. #
- @qui_oui @profragsdale Spare time? Isn't that one of those 'old wives tales about things we get if we behave and don't talk back? #phdchat #
- @Ed_Dale @DanRaine @gurubob I just signed up for The Challenge. The email subject and tag both refer to 2010; is this an oversight or old? #
- I just signed up for The Challenge http://bit.ly/9DW94i that addresses Internet Marketing. Has anybody participated in this? #
- @christiepooh Sounds awful. #
- @AndreaZellner Good point. This is difficult as so much is related, with one thing influencing the thoughts of another . . . #phdchat #
- @BarbaraNixon It does ring as one of the sillier movie names I recall in a long time. #
- @AndreaZellner How to draw in the reins so you can remain focused? #phdchat #
- @avdbmt I know, I know! BTW, congrats on your new position! #
- @SueFolley That is all we can do. #
- @cristinacost Back the first week of September for #BERA #
- @lizgloyn Congrats on the position for next year! #
- @SueFolley Look forward to your Tweets to let those of us who could not attend #ece11 what happens there. #
- @cristinacost @kshjensen @courosa @SueFolley I really like Glynis Cousin's work; wish could have heard her! #ece11 #

Jeffrey’s Twitter Updates for 2011-07-06
- @trentmkays Thanks for the RT. Got a few suggestions, and hope for a couple more simple ones. #
- @francesbell @cristinacost @torresk @lindacq @courosa @catherinecronin @heloukee @ilenedawn @sakinasofia @fredgarnett Enjoy; quite jealous! #
- @Lemness How was the meeting? #
- @arjunsingh @hummingbird604 Keeping my fingers crossed for Vancouver in April 2012 for #AERA Have to get my abstract done and submitted. #
- @arjunsingh When to The Center of Civilization as We Know It (aka #NYC again? @hummingbird604 #
- @debrockstroh Let's just put it this way, my quant is such that I had to count 3 times with my fingers, and even then I was suspicious! #
- @debrockstroh Goodness, where is my cross and holy water. Away, you demon! #
- @mark_carrigan Hope you are feeling better now. I read about that yesterday and it did not seem fun. Talk about needing a hip flask! #
- @arjunsingh Our world gets smaller and smaller, ehh?! @hummingbird604 #
- @hummingbird604 Agreed. @arjunsingh is a great chap who visits #NYC far to infrequently. We need folks like him on our side of the border #
- @hummingbird604 Yes, I attended 2 @NorthernVoice conferences. Fantastic community of people. Where I first learned to Tweet @arjunsingh #
- @hummingbird604 I have not found much benefit in LinkedIn. A colleague of mine has, though it has still eluded me. #
- I am looking for a social media 101 primer for a colleague who wants to start a small business. Any additional recommendations? #
- Wow, Sunday I did 86 Tweets http://bit.ly/noWYxh. That is a record for me (not that I am counting). #
- @JaneBozarth I learned a tremendous amount. Now to tweak a few questions already!! #phdchat #
- @savasavasava I wish we could, though it is entirely too tall and wide at this point. Would need a large piece of equipment to move. Alas. #
- @OwhyOwhy Yes, the pilot this morning went very well. Now, to hear back from the other 2 people I approached . . . #phdchat #
- @OwhyOwhy Can I borrow that line?! #phdchat #
- @4KM Really great suggestions, thank you! #
- What a day; all house and car errands with some studies done this morning. Some day off. #
- Got to Time Warner Cable in Liberty, and there is a huge line with only one person working at the window. #
- The Jeep's 4000 mile servicing and tire rotation went without incident. #
- @hummingbird604 Sorry to hear about you and your friend's loss. #
- @savasavasava It seems it may become unstable by a hill and will choke off another tree growing near it. Have become rather fond of it. #
- Heard about the tree while at the garage getting the car serviced. #
- Just got some news that my favorite tree has to be cut down; I feel I have some sort of connection with this tree. #
- I am planning for my first pilot interview this morning. We just moved the time up, so rushing a bit to prep #phdchat #
- After a long drive home, a bit too tired to catch up with anything this evening. There is always tomorrow! #
