There are 3 criteria for participation:
1. Are you doctoral student or have you completed a doctoral degree (in any discipline, with any type of doctoral degree, anywhere in the world)?
2. Have you encountered any thresholds or had any troublesome experiences while engaged in your degree that left you with a new sense of your discipline or identity of yourself as a researcher / evidence-supported expert practitioner? Perhaps you experienced an aha! along the way? How about a transformed understanding or perspective?
3. Did you engage in any aspect of your studies from a distance, online, or using any form of technology while engaging in your doctoral degree?
If you answered yes to these 3 eligibility criteria, I invite you to consider speaking with me about it in a single 60-90 minute interview (phone or Skype, as you wish). For more information, my email and contact information are here.
I appreciate any assistance with identifying participants for my study; please share this link or information with anybody who you think may be interested. Thank you.
I think this criteria may be a little broad, I did a Ph.D. in computational Chemistry, and like most science based Ph.D.s used technology as part of that process

I think this criteria may be a little broad, I did a Ph.D. in computational Chemistry, and like most science based Ph.D.s used technology as part of that process, however I feel you have something more specific in mind.
Laurence, thank you for your reply and interest in my work.
By technology use, what I mean is using technology to support any aspect of studying from a distance (such as by studying online, communicating with a supervisor from a distance using email or phone, working with colleagues using social media, etc.).
With this said, is this something you want to discuss a bit more, perhaps on a quick phone call?
Thank you again.
Jeffrey
Count me in, Jeffry, if I am any use 🙂
Sarah, thank you so very much for offering to participate.
As long as you meet the 3 eligibility criteria, can you review the ethical paperwork and send me an email or complete my contact form http://silenceandvoice.com/contact-me/ stating that you consent? Can you include a few potential dates and times, along with your timezone, of when we can potentially speak?
Appreciate your kind offer; thank you!
Jeffrey
I really want to help. I’m not sure that I’ve crossed a threshold yet. I think I’m stuck in them. LOL
Christiana, thanks for your offer! Yes, I need people to have crossed that threshold, as I am studying that in-between place. Perhaps if my research takes long enough . . .
Please pass this on to anybody else interested!
Thank you.
Jeffrey
Ha! I hope your research doesn’t take that long. 🙂
You are not alone in that regard. Not alone!
Jeffrey
Hello Jeffrey,
I would be interested in participating but I’m not sure I meet the technology requirement. There was no distance learning component of my degree, but I am doing qualitative research with the support of an analytic computer program. I
‘ve experienced some stress around how to learn the program, how to use it, when to put it aside, etc. It has some bells and whistles, but I have used it almost exclusively to code and retrieve, not for looking at relationships within the data.
I have also experienced several aha! moments, but they occurred as I reread my material, without the use of the program other than to retrieve related material.
Regards,
Judith
I will reply to you directly via email; thank you!
Jeffrey
Happy to help. I have just recently submitted a Doctorate in Education done entirely by distance. Do I have some stories to tell. 🙂
I will reply to you directly via email;thank you!
Jeffrey
I just finished my first year. Had a couple of surprises. But only had one AHA moment.
What is/are your research question(s)? That may give me some ideas if I can be any use.
More information about my doctoral research can be found here — http://silenceandvoice.com/doctoral-thesis/
Let me know if this helps with your question.
Thank you so much for your interest, Wu!

Hi Jeffrey
I would like to participate and I meet the criteria. It would be easier for me to delay participation until some time in September though as August is a killer month for me!
I will make a note to contact you in September but feel free to email me if it slips through my mind… tronica [at] gmail.com
Cheers
Monica
Wonderful! Look forward to speaking with you when your schedule opens a bit.
All the best.
Jeffrey
Hi Jeffrey
I’m an Australian PHD candidate physically located in Adelaide but supervised at Queensland University of Technology. I’ve certainly experienced several transformations of identity in my candidacy and wouldn’t have been able to get there without email and phone contact with supervisors as well as the occasional face to face encounter! I’ve also undertaken several extracurricular learning units online and engage with my research community via blogs and twitter. I’ll be in Seattle for IR12.0 so will hopefully get to meet you then? Or can engage in phone interview prior…
Thank you, Sonja. I will email you directly.
Jeffrey
For what are you looking when you say:
“2. Have you encountered any thresholds or had any troublesome experiences while engaged in your degree that left you with a new sense of your discipline or identity of yourself as a researcher / evidence-supported expert practitioner? Perhaps you experienced an aha! along the way? How about a transformed understanding or perspective?”
Maybe I just need more coffee…..
I meet all of your criteria, although most of my “aha” moments occurred while teaching online courses, both as a TA and an Adjunct professor. I have taught online for over 10 years. Are you interested?
Lisa and Linda, thank you for your replies. I will email you both directly about your experiences and my research.
Thank you.
Jeffrey
