  9. How about if we see who is here? Want to introduce ourselves? #adjunctchat
  10. Perhaps mention who is here, and what / where you teach as an adjunct, part-time instructor, or non-tenure track temporary? #adjunctchat
  11. My name is Ishai. I teach English, mostly FYComp, and I’ve been adjuncting 5 years or so. #adjunctchat
  12. Hi All! Melissa in SC, teach instructional tech at South Florida as online adjunct. #adjunctchat
  13. @IshaiBarnoy Teaching as an adjunct for 5 years seems a long time; perhaps a trend there? #adjunctchat
  14. @JeffreyKeefer I’m a term instructor in Communication/Mktg/Education in Upstate (true upstate) NY #adjunctchat
  15. @Comprof1 Welcome! I am running a bit late today as I just drove upstate NY to Syracuse and needed to find wifi! #adjunctchat
  16. @JeffreyKeefer A trend indeed! Which, I guess, highlights an important question for another time: How to leave adjuncting? #AdjunctChat
  17. I teach at New York University and Pace University. Grad research and doctoral-level teaching and learning #adjunctchat
  18. @JeffreyKeefer Currently I’m looking for FT job as my youngest is off to college this yr, but been adjuncting for 22 yrs. #adjunctchat

  21. Our topic today is “Adjunct faculty and social media use — Do’s, Don’ts, and other grey areas.” #adjunctchat
  22. This topic was suggested recently in a discussion with some other adjuncts, and is one I am quite interested in discussing. #adjunctchat
  23. #adjunctchat I adjunct in the English dept. at #CUNY‘s @Lehman_College & am in my 2nd year of the PhD English program at CUNY Grad. Center.

  26. @JeffreyKeefer Currently I’m at UAlbany but also taught at Siena College & Empire State College (online) #adjunctchat
  27. @VCVaile and quite important and helpful work that all is; glad you could make it today! #adjunctchat
  28. Let’s get started now that we know some of us who are here. #adjunctchat
  29. Here is our first question. Please reply with A1: so we can follow the threads. Q1: What social media tools do you use? #adjunctchat
  30. i’m odd; early career in terms of research (but hav tenure- can i gatecrash?) Interested social media, use of media in teaching #adjunctchat
  31. A1: I suppose this can mean both personal as well as related to your teaching. #adjunctchat
  32. @JeffreyKeefer Social media has really been a help for me as an adjunct who doesn’t always have office space #adjunctchat
  33. @JeffreyKeefer Social media has really been a help for me as an adjunct who doesn’t always have office space #adjunctchat
  34. A1: I use twitter primarily. I was once in a writing workshop that used facebook doc interface. I use blogging platforms, too. #adjunctchat
  35. @JeffreyKeefer A1 W/ my students: edmodo, used to use Ning, youtube, blogs, google docs, FB, LinkedIn. #adjunctchat
  36. Q1: What social media tools do you use? A1: Twitter mostly, also G+, FB, Pinterest, LinkedIn #adjunctchat
  37. @JeffreyKeefer taught complit, fy comp, Spanish, developmental, ESL, GED, family literacy, CAW in afterschool & more #adjunctchat
  38. A1: I use Twitter as my main social media, though have also used FB and LinkedIn for groups, Google groups and docs for collab. #adjunctchat
  39. Diigo, Scoop.it, VoiceThread, Blogger, twitterGoogedocs, ePals, tools for digital storytelling #adjunctchat
  40. A1 at CUNY Adjunct Project we use Twitter, FB, a listserv, and a Google Group (for more focused discussion). #Adjunctchat
  41. A1: I’m on G+, but that seems to have been taken over by the gaming and game design sphere of my life. #adjunctchat
  42. @anciana Great list! Almost forgot about social aspects of Diigo and Scoop.it. #adjunctchat
  43. A!: Great thoughts, everybody. Any other ones we are missing? #adjunctchat
  44. Q1: What social media tools do you use? A1: Fb, blogs (3 platforms), Twitter (4 accts), Pinterest, Scoopit, Storify, more #adjunctchat
  45. Right now I’m listening to a webinar on audioboo #adjunctchat
  46. @JeffreyKeefer I’ve been keepng in touch w/ former students more & more on Linkedin. Gives me feedback on impact of my teaching #adjunctchat
  47. A1: This seems to stretch us with multimembership indeed. #adjunctchat
  48. Now that we know what tools we use, perhaps it may be time for Q2: How do you use social media with your students? #adjunctchat
  49. A1: That’s right, LinkedIn! I swear, I’ve been swatting off the LinkedIn emails like some deadly mosquitos. #adjunctchat
  50. The topic we are discussing is “Adjunct faculty and social media use — Do’s, Don’ts, and other grey areas.” #adjunctchat
  51. Q2: How do you use social media with your students? A2: announcements/updates, prof. networking #adjunctchat
  52. A2: I use the blogspot platform as a streamlined, free-for-all alternative to my school’s proprietary course software. #adjunctchat
  53. Our question now is — Q2: How do you use social media with your students? #adjunctchat
  54. A2: I can’t speak for all, but many graduate employees use various social media tools in their teaching, incl. Twitter. #adjunctchat
  55. A2: I tell my students that if anything is pressing send me a Tweet via @jeffreykeefer or DM me, as that sends me a phone alert #adjunctchat
  56. A2: I tried twitter for a class once, but it was way too large of a learning hump. I ended up calling it off that semester. #adjunctchat
  57. A2: Personally, I’ve yet to employ social media in my teaching but have thought about class Tumblrs. #adjunctchat
  58. A2: Thanks for the reminder! Also use a class hashtag #edf6284 – share relevant resources, news during the term #adjunctchat
  59. @IshaiBarnoy A2: Can you talk a little more about how you use that and why an alternative to the “official” one? #adjunctchat
  60. @Comprof1 Thanks for sharing; we will have to take a look at these later \ #adjunctchat
  61. A2: I have a dedicated blog for self-paced online ESL study group, volunteer w/ county GED group on Fb #adjunctchat
  62. @IshaiBarnoy A2: I find many of my students are Twitter novices, though that seems to be changing. #adjunctchat
  63. A2: I’ve generally grown to see twitter as too invasive, too game-like. The Google email/blogs/docs suite is impersonal enough. #adjunctchat
  64. @JeffreyKeefer A2 I’ve had trouble with communication on twitter (w/ class #) I communicate with edmodo. Good mobile app #adjunctchat
  65. A2: Personally, I’d like to do a full-fledged class website but that requires more work for such little pay to begin with. #adjunctchat
  66. @VCVaile A2: Do you have any best practices for working with the blog and your students? #adjunctchat
  67. @JeffreyKeefer A2: The “official” one has too large of a feature-set, and different interfaces are tucked in odd places. #adjunctchat
  68. I just became a member of the #adjunctchat Twub. For live tweets, photos, videos and more, check out twubs.com/adjunctchat
  69. taught online in 90s before LMS, used email, text chat & groups, 1st egroups then yahoo #adjunctchat
  70. A2: It’s been tough getting students motivated to use Twitter – developed a few minor assignments to encourage them to try it #adjunctchat
  71. A2 Has anyone had difficulty with univ or students not allowing using any but “official” media sanctioned by school? #adjunctchat
  72. @JeffreyKeefer A2: Also, the “official” one is bandwidth-heavy and prone to crashing. #adjunctchat
  73. @IshaiBarnoy A2: It reminds me of how LMSs are starting to integrate social media more now #adjunctchat
  74. @IshaiBarnoy A2: They “allow” you to use something else in an official capacity? #adjunctchat
  75. @CUNYadjuncts edmodo is easy to set up and good for that. I loved Ning for that until it went commercial (fee based) #adjunctchat
  76. @CUNYadjuncts edmodo is easy to set up and good for that. I loved Ning for that until it went commercial (fee based) #adjunctchat
  77. @Comprof1 A2: I am not familiar with that app; can you share a link to it later? #adjunctchat
  78. @JeffreyKeefer @IshaiBarnoy A2 still too clunky w/ too many bugs. My students lost their blog posts in Blackboard. Nightmare #adjunctchat
  79. @Comprof1 @CUNYadjuncts Ning better than most LMS platforms.Too bad it went Pearson #adjunctchat
  80. @Comprof1 @CUNYadjuncts Ning better than most LMS platforms.Too bad it went Pearson #adjunctchat
  81. I teach my students to use social media tools for their own professional development bc they are all future teachers #adjunctchat
  82. I teach my students to use social media tools for their own professional development bc they are all future teachers #adjunctchat
  83. @Comprof1 @JeffreyKeefer Blackboard is indeed a nightmare. But a colleague of mine has become a kind of master in it. #adjunctchat
  84. @JeffreyKeefer a number of NFM board members…working on them though #adjunctchat
  85. @IshaiBarnoy my experience similar, students 2 yrs ago not into twitter, still that way i think, at least in new zealand #adjunctchat
  86. @VCVaile Keep plugging away; I think many of us are in the same boat! #adjunctchat
  87. @JeffreyKeefer more than a few including communications chair think social media is waste of tiem #adjunctchat
  88. Perhaps a twist on Q2: How do you use social media with your students? = Do we use this with other adjuncts?! #adjunctchat
  89. A2: my Q: what’s instructional value of social media to students, and what’s monetary value of teaching it? #adjunctchat
  90. A2: my Q: what’s instructional value of social media to students, and what’s monetary value of teaching it? #adjunctchat
  91. @IshaiBarnoy @JeffreyKeefer A2 I’m still looking for a good place to put my resources on for f2f These days I use google docs. #adjunctchat
  92. @CUNYadjuncts None. Some argue there’s value for a composition class. I’ve grown to see otherwise. Paper and pencil still best. #adjunctchat
  93. A2: i.e., how much should/could an #adjunct get paid to teach social media vs. what he/she actually gets paid? important Q. #adjunctchat
  94. @JeffreyKeefer @IshaiBarnoy class i teach in has had great success with wikis used to support groupwork inside of blackboard #adjunctchat
  95. @VCVaile I know; I often find using social media a challenge with dissenters, though they are slowly being left behind… #adjunctchat
  96. @JeffreyKeefer I’ve tried connecting w/ colleagues on twitter to share resources on same course, but most don’t use #adjunctchat
  97. @ai1sa @IshaiBarnoy A2: That is great; I have not had much success with wikis with my students. #adjunctchat
  98. @CUNYadjuncts A2 Do you mean teaching w/ it or how to use SM (i.e. ethics, critical thinking) #adjunctchat
  99. Feel free to keep discussing Q1 and Q2, though let’s move on to Q3 #adjunctchat
  100. @JeffreyKeefer @ai1sa #adjunctchat Say more, please. I’ve been wondering about wikis. Have never used them, myself.
  101. Q3: How do you differentiate between your personal and academic social media usage? #adjunctchat
  102. A3: Do you use different accounts for personal and teaching / learning / ongoing study? #adjunctchat
  103. @ai1sa @JeffreyKeefer @IshaiBarnoy I used wikis until my school told us we had to erase everything at the end of each semester #adjunctchat
  104. I really like Voicethread. I have my students each record their reactions to videos or assignments #adjunctchat
  105. I really like Voicethread. I have my students each record their reactions to videos or assignments #adjunctchat
  106. Q3: How do you differentiate between your personal and academic social media usage? #adjunctchat
  107. @JeffreyKeefer A3: I no longer use twitter academically. And I use the Google suite (minus G+) exclusively for courses. #adjunctchat
  108. @IshaiBarnoy @JeffreyKeefer @ai1sa I haven’t much, but know many experienced who swear by Wikis #adjunctchat
  109. We are discussing “Adjunct faculty and social media use — Do’s, Don’ts, and other grey areas” in today’s #adjunctchat
  110. @ai1sa @JeffreyKeefer @IshaiBarnoy Our school is very narrow in administering FERPA laws (US privacy laws for students) #adjunctchat
  111. @comprof1 A2 right, what do students get out of it academically other than something they need for professional development? #adjunctchat
  112. @JeffreyKeefer @IshaiBarnoy particular class is health &environment 1200 students! wikis in gps of 6 used to construct a report #adjunctchat
  113. A3: Different accounts/platforms for the most part. Twitter, G+, LI =pro, FB, Instagram=personal #adjunctchat
  114. Q3 on differentiating between personal & academic #socialmedia – reminds me of @BonStewart on #digitalidentity #adjunctchat
  115. @CUNYadjuncts What is CUNY policy on social media and FERPA? Wondering if as strict as SUNY #adjunctchat
  116. A3 May I also throw in how do you use social media for #adjunct #activism? 🙂 More #adjuncts on Twitter, e.g., more virality. #adjunctchat
  117. A3: I use Twitter and LinkedIn with my students, though use the same accounts I use for my personal stuff there, too. #adjunctchat
  118. @CUNYadjuncts @Comprof1 Depending on the field and specific course, social media great for networking, broadening connections #adjunctchat
  119. A3: I do have more than one account in some of these tools, though they are more to interact with different audiences. #adjunctchat
  120. A3: Me, I’ve been off-and-on weighing the possibility of erasing my personal Twitter/Google existence entirely. #adjunctchat
  121. @IshaiBarnoy @ai1sa @JeffreyKeefer But don’t you think it would be so much more educational for students to see others work? #adjunctchat
  122. @JeffreyKeefer i only use twitter for my academic life, friends family dont tweet #adjunctchat
  123. @JeffreyKeefer i only use twitter for my academic life, friends family dont tweet #adjunctchat
  124. @CUNYadjuncts many on Fb too…not same which keep me busy…syndication a sanity saver #adjunctchat
  125. A3: I find multiple accounts lead me toward bipolar disorder; something like that dualism I try to overcome #ANT #adjunctchat
  126. I use Twitter, Diigo, rss feeds of blogs & Scoopit 4 my own pd.Students can access mine but they have their own accounts #adjunctchat
  127. @JeffreyKeefer Exactly! Too many personalities. Can help to create a strategy for how you’ll use before beginning. #adjunctchat
  128. @Comprof1 @ai1sa @JeffreyKeefer Yeah, but I’m also self-conscious about MY work. I guess it’s a personal issue of mine. #adjunctchat
  129. @JeffreyKeefer I only mix personal & school on twitter & linkedin because these two are “professional spaces” for me. #adjunctchat Not FB
  130. Good q, don’t know. Anyone at #CUNY? “@comprof1: What is CUNY policy on social media & FERPA? Wondering if as strict as SUNY #adjunctchat
  131. @IshaiBarnoy @Comprof1 @ai1sa I suppose once we acknowledge the NSA reads and crunches all data, what else could we fear?! #adjunctchat
  132. @JeffreyKeefer I don’t friend students on Facebook but if I want them to see a status I make it public. #adjunctchat
  133. @JeffreyKeefer A3: Heh, I’m trying different things. Deleted soc-med apps from my phone. Trying to limit overall twitter use. #adjunctchat
  134. @Comprof1 @JeffreyKeefer Have to be on Fb bcz that is where most #adjunct convos & activity are…twitter rules for live #adjunctchat
  135. @JeffreyKeefer on Twitter, I use a particular hash tag for students to follow #adjunctchat
  136. @VCVaile @Comprof1 Perhaps you can share some of those references to some of the FB groups you find useful for adjuncts #adjunctchat
  137. A3: Wow, lots of ideas floating around here today. Am exploring faster options for archiving these chats to refer back to #adjunctchat
  138. It may be time to already move on to Q4: Where do you get ideas or go to share about your social media use with your students? #adjunctchat
  139. Q4: Where do you get ideas or go to share about your social media use with your students?#adjunctchat
  140. Q4: searches, Twitter, chats, news feeds (Fb, RSS, G+) #adjunctchat
  141. Q4 above all networks & conversations – connections #adjunctchat
  142. @IshaiBarnoy To that point I saw a note in the window at a downtown community activism bookshop: “Edward Snowden Welcome Here!” #adjunctchat
  143. @IshaiBarnoy To that point I saw a note in the window at a downtown community activism bookshop: “Edward Snowden Welcome Here!” #adjunctchat
  144. A4: Conversations like this one. 🙂 And instructors who share their ideas, lessons learned via blogs, conferences, etc. #adjunctchat
  145. A4: I get most of my ideas reading some of the things that many of those active in #adjunctchat share on an ongoing basis.
  146. @Melissa_Venable A4 Hate to say it, but I’m the guru for most adjuncts I know #adjunctchat. I get ideas from my PLN on twitter #adjunctchat
  147. @Melissa_Venable personal lists of blogs…in folders on reader, tagged #adjunctchat
  148. @Comprof1 @Melissa_Venable A4: I think we may need another PLN topic option for the next #adjunctchat as well.
  149. @Comprof1 That’s great! You are able to share your expertise. Get the ball rolling. #adjunctchat
  150. @JeffreyKeefer A4 Also, our school’s learning & teaching center holds a tech expo each semester. #adjunctchat but I’m ahead of their curve
  151. My PD = blogs: Free Technology for Teachers, Larry Ferlazzo’s Websites of the Day, Nik’s Learning Technology Blog, etc. #adjunctchat
  152. throw the Q out to your personal networks – customized crowdsourcing #adjunctchat
  153. throw the Q out to your personal networks – customized crowdsourcing #adjunctchat
  154. Knowing that we have so many more things to still share, time for the final Q5 for today . . . #adjunctchat
  155. Q5: What do you plan to do differently with social media and your students next semester? #adjunctchat
  156. RT @JeffreyKeefer Q5: What do you plan to do differently with social media and your students next semester? #adjunctchat
  157. A5: I am teaching all summer, though with my class that begins in September I will increase Twitter use around our tag #SCPSRPM #adjunctchat
  158. A5: I think I will discuss the extra credit assignment only via that tag . . . it is extra credit after all! #adjunctchat
  159. Having students start a Scoop.it account and attend a Twitterchat:” #langchat, #Ellchat, #edtechchat#adjunctchat
  160. Revising Q5 to: What do you plan to do differently with social media & your learning/action networks #adjunctchat
  161. A5: Usual flipped-classroom fare — busywork online, actual discussions in person. Not sure how to enforce yet. #adjunctchat
  162. A5: TBD – possibly more practice with Twitter, integrate Diigo collection of resources #adjunctchat
  163. My goal is to get more board members blogging, more on Twitter. How do you start your stus on twitter? #adjunctchat
  164. Yes! RT @JeffreyKeefer A5: think I will discuss the extra credit assignment only via that tag. it is extra credit after all! #adjunctchat
  165. @Melissa_Venable Diigo would be gr8 discussion platform but does not get used much for that #adjunctchat
  166. We have a few minutes remaining in today’s #AdjunctChat on Adjunct faculty and social media use — Do’s, Don’ts, and other grey areas.
  167. @VCVaile Create a short list of specific tasks w/how-to guides: set up account, RT, reply… #adjunctchat
  168. @IshaiBarnoy A5 I want to use more video/visual. Going to try to use touchcast which embeds social media links into videocast #adjunctchat
  169. @JeffreyKeefer A5: I want to placing it apart, a duty to be carried out as preparation for class. #adjunctchat
  170. A5: What rich ideas so many of you are sharing. I feel the bar is now raised higher for me to kick out the jams with #SocMed #adjunctchat
  171. @Melissa_Venable I tried that with various media but found FB best for sharing resources (esp electronic) #adjunctchat
  172. @Melissa_Venable need adapting for resistant, adult fac…thinking get them to start by just following a topic or 3-4 tweeps #adjunctchat
  173. I am completely amazed at how quickly today’s chat has proceeded, and nice to see some new faces among the seasoned ones 😉 #adjunctchat
  174. @JeffreyKeefer would paper “An Introduction to Social Media for Scientists” plosbiology.org/article/info%3… be of interest to #adjunctchat
  175. @VCVaile I like that idea – try out soc med with each other first, in small groups. Locate some of the “big” accts to folllow #adjunctchat
  176. @Melissa_Venable they are worse than any stus about ignoring tutorials, how-to guides, even videos #adjunctchat
  177. @JeffreyKeefer I’ve put shared my syllabi with others (adjuncts & tt at other schools) on google docs. #adjunctchat
  178. I think some people have already started to address take-aways and next steps, but perhaps any final thoughts? #adjunctchat
  179. @VCVaile When you find what works with this group, you should definitely publish/present your experience, tips. #adjunctchat
  180. I know a few things I will try differently especially regarding intentionally reaching to my PLN about using SoMe for teaching #adjunctchat
  181. & assignments…ROTFL…but may try feeding them content that they have to go to socialmedia to get more of #adjunctchat
  182. I know a few things I will try differently especially regarding intentionally reaching to my PLN about using SoMe for teaching #adjunctchat
  183. @JeffreyKeefer Anyone intersted in public speaking, CMC, group communication, int’l mktg syllabi, digital WAC let me know #adjunctchat
  184. @Melissa_Venable I could threaten to publish if they don’t participate #adjunctchat
  185. Question — we have always met on Tuesdays though today’s Thursday #AdjunctChat seemed well attended and active . . .
  186. Shall we continue to meet this time on Thursdays instead of Tuesdays? #adjunctchat
  187. I think I actually prefer Thursday at this time, though will do whichever day works best for everybody else #adjunctchat
  188. @Melissa_Venable @Comprof1 fb a great conduit to the sharing of ideas, the actual sharing of docs i use a messaged dropbox link #adjunctchat
  189. Does anybody have any other topic ideas we can add to our poll for the next #adjunctchat ?
  190. @JeffreyKeefer Thurs better for me, not sure why but Tues afternoon has more interruptions, distractions #adjunctchat
  191. We have come to the end of another #AdjunctChat. Thank you for sharing and feel free to continue the discussion!
  192. @ai1sa @Melissa_Venable I need to start using dropbox. I’ve heard a lot about that. any you prefer? #adjunctchat
  193. @VCVaile That makes two of us for Thursday; anybody else think this day is better? #adjunctchat
  194. @JeffreyKeefer getting ready for fall semester, social media cont’d (ethics, privacy, etc). #adjunctchat
