Yesterday’s New York Times had an interesting article on the recent increase in lifelist literature, comprising books on the best seller list as well as upcoming movies. I have never really considered the places I should visit before I die (particularly since I no longer agree in the concept of “should”–it being a guilt-driven requirement demanded by another person or institution).
Regardless, if I had such a list, what would I want to do or accomplish? Let’s see:
- I want to live in France, especially in Provence where I can get inspired by the same colors and scenes that so affected Van Gogh.
- I want to finish my PhD. This is another story . . .
- Pay off my debt.
- ???
Hmm, this list is tougher than it seems. Like Hugh Hefner at the end of the NY Times, I can relate with his statement, “I honestly, can’t think of anything I don’t already have.”
I wonder what other people think about this?
This is the first blog post I am making using WordPress. I actually installed the program myself, though not in the 5 minutes the WordPress people promised. If only I can get my previous posts from MovableType to be imported; the directions did not account for the error messages I received.
Seems MT is causing me problems even after I stop using it!
Cannot get my MovableType entries to import into WP. Anybody any ideas? I keep getting an error message.
Just installed WordPress.
I decided I should make business cards for my consulting work, and after two orders in a row of cards that appeared purple instead of the blue that I wanted, I thought I should change the design. At least VistaPrint reimbursed me without any hassle at all. While I wish they would have gotten the cards right the first time, their customer support has been excellent, so I will try with them a third time for my cards.
Now, to select a new design. Like branding, I want to get it just right but am finding the commitment to be difficult. I wonder what this says about my personality?
More to follow . . .

Ate a Starbucks Very Veggie Crunch sandwich for lunch. Boring wrap. VERY boring wrap.
My students will present their final projects today for the Business Communication MBA class I am teaching. Looking forward to them.
@macboyx - thank you for the Wordpress tip. Now, is there a tip for not losing all my Movable Type permalinks? That is the last hesitation.
In my academic journey that is increasingly becoming more philosophical, I came across a reference for what seems to be an interesting conference, the annual one for the Society for Philosophy in the Contemporary World. From the society’s description, it states:
As a society, we are committed to the application of philosophy to understanding and solving contemporary social problems broadly conceived. At the same time, we are equally committed to a continuing dialogue about the best ways philosophy might be applied in the contemporary world. Hence, SPCW promotes work in applied philosophy, philosophy and public policy, philosophy of the professions, race, and gender studies, environmental philosophy, educational philosophy, and a range of multicultural issues.
I suppose what really struck me was one of the statements that discussed what they emphasize, “We emphasize fellowship.” This is something I have not seen much of from a peer-reviewed perspective. WHile fellowship I think can naturally happen with similar-minded people at a conference, I have not seen it as something that the sponsoring organization formally promotes.
I will have to look at some of the recent proceeding to see if this conference and organization may be for me. Did I mention that I am exploring new professional homes?
