I Will Participate in #change11

Now that I have returned from #BERA2011 and the UK (I still have a lot to write about the conference, Stonehenge, Avebury, Montreal, and the like over the past week), I decided that it may be a great opportunity to decompress (or what-have-you) with George Siemens, Stephen Downes, and Dave Cormier who are facilitating the Change: Education, Learning, and Technology! Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), affectionately known as #change11.

Yes, I have attended these sorts of massive courses (open to a variety of ideas on one hand while unfocused and hard to navigate as the Web itself on the other) before, though I think now I am in a somewhat different place. Yes, I am working full-time while also writing up my doctoral thesis, though what better way is there to decompress online while also being open to learning something new while in the middle of so many (and soon-to-be) friends?

Let the learning begin. Hmm, perhaps it already has?

  • @trentmkays Sounds interesting; I love postmodernism as it challenges all those "should" and "have to" notions we often face. #
  • @trentmkays These for your classes you are teaching or taking? #
  • @OpenUPEducation @DrAshCasey @dugganjr @Kerileef @VGoodyear Really good question. I have a few things, though need to organize them. #
  • @DrAshCasey @dugganjr @OpenUPEducation @Kerileef @VGoodyear Perhaps this is easier to do? Ironic for those engaged in education even? #
  • @BronSt You know, that is why I like you so much! #
  • @sarahthesheepu Never tried the peanut butter; perhaps I should put it on my to-eat list? #
  • @christiepooh Been there; done that. I think I just unsubscribed from lots of interesting lists that I simply do not use any longer. #
  • What a tiring day. All went well the first day back to work, but it sure was tiring. I think I need a vacation! #
  • Only 454 email messages in my Inbox when I returned to the office. Alas, only about 1/2 of them are junk. The rest all take time. #
  • Headed to the office; first day back. Wonder how many emails (the good, bad, and ugly) await? #

  • Just saw this pushy woman who left her cart in line at Trader Joe's to try samples and such have her cart pushed out of line. Hehe. #
  • I have all the pics from my trip into iPhoto; I am reminded how busy my week between Montreal and London really was. #
  • @savasavasava @DrGarcia Shite? Is that French? #
  • @DrGarcia Figured I would focus on these other things since I simply can't bear any more 9/11 heart-pounding. #
  • Next steps are to sort through paper-based mail and then sort receipts. After that, to organize photos and then resume research. #
  • There, now back to #InboxZero with home / personal / academic email AND all caught up with laundry and ironing after travel for #BERA2011 #
  • @sarahthesheepu scd? #
  • @dugganjr Perhaps, perhaps. #
  • @savasavasava I also think we are our own worst enemy. Alas. #
  • @webnemesis Yes, they would want to classify people to make distinctions between groups. Makes humanity manageable that way, perhaps? #
  • @webnemesis Do you really believe that those sorts of tests can capture your richness of individuality and experience? #
  • @savasavasava I have no idea what that symbol is . . . #
  • @queercrip @azasays What about them? 😉 #
  • @qui_oui I suppose it depends on if you changed it to gain followers or not!! #
  • @heatherdavis Thanks! #
  • I lived in #NYC on 9/11 as I still do now. Many of us breathed the toxic fumes burning for 3 weeks, and that smell and anger still burns. #
  • Does anybody else think the world is a more dangerous place, here 10 years after 9/11? #
  • @salma_patel Part-time vs. Full-time phd studies really depends on whose definitions we are using I suppose #phdchat #
  • @RhythmicDeets I initially used #Scrivener with #Endnote they do work, though a bit clunky on the latter's side. #
  • @salma_patel @andycoverdale Looks great, but seems to require programming skills; not just data analysis. Too bad, as otherwise interesting #
  • @salma_patel Months? Just finished my 3rd year in. #
  • @christiepooh Nicely done. #
  • @dugganjr Sorry did not get to meet at #BERA2011 #
  • @salma_patel I presented a paper; was about an aspect of my literature review. I am now finished with my data collection. Lots to write. #
  • @NSRiazat Thanks; waiting to make some success, though appreciate your confidence! #
  • @savasavasava Yes, that fits with your new avatar! #
  • @sarahthesheepu Makes sense; let's chat a little closer to when you know when you will arrive and have time for a #NYC #phdchat #meetup #
  • @ianrobsons Yes; will have to try for it. Am in the process of submitting abstracts and the like for 2012 conferences, so fingers crossed. #
  • @JaneDavis13 😉 #
  • @trentmkays Goodness, no; not Catholic! Those churches are empty to diversity. This was an Episcopal one. #
  • @lynntrinko @klbz @trentmkays @lindathestar @MisaimedBrain @christiepooh Glad you found its Tweeting useful. Have not seen its likes before. #
  • @heatherdavis Thanks for the recommendation; looks quite interesting. Any delay with the keyboard? #

  • BTW, this wonderful wedding ceremony was at St. Mark's Church in the Bowery. Truly, the Episcopal Church welcomes you! #
  • At the recessional, one groom looked bubbly and happy, while the other a bit more nervous. Perhaps life just repeats in new ways? Amen. #
  • The communion music is a jazzed version of The Beatles' I want to hold your hand. Very fitting. #
  • I am not sure what is more surprising for me – 2 grooms or the entire gathering of people passing around the bread and wine. #
  • I like how the priest explained to us what will come next. Very inviting. #
  • Hope my Tweeting about this does not disturb those around me, but I am hoping that sharing this here may promote understanding and peace. #
  • The span of music from "not too young to get married" to Gounod's Ave Maria shows the wealth of music to celebrate. #
  • As the pastor celebrating the ceremony said, this is the very working through of fear and challenge that Jesus spoke of in the Beatitudes. #
  • This is very refreshing after so many years of the stiff Catholic traditions I have engaged in over the years. #
  • This wedding, that happens to be gay, is the first ceremony in a Christian church I have seen in some time. #
  • This gathering is to show that the state has now allowed us to celebrate this blessing. Seems the Episcopal Church is nicely progressive. #
  • The Gospel was the Beatitudes. The homily spoke about how this wedding is not making an exception. #
  • This wedding comes from the thirf marriage rite of the Church of New Zealand. Very classy yet approachable. #
  • There was just a modern Psalm, a reading from the Wizard of Oz and a reading from Goodridge v. Department of Health. Very fitting. #
  • There was a wonderful jazz opening, with singing and clapping. Goodness, straight weddings have a lot to learn from a gay wedding. #
  • We are attending this wedding ceremony, and I feel I just have to Tweet it; how else to share a gay wedding in a NY church? #
  • Getting ready to attend a wedding this evening; will be the first gay wedding I have attended since NY legalized it this summer. #
  • @savasavasava @JaneDavis13 Seems significant. Of course, as doctoral liminality is the focus of my thesis, I would say that! #phdchat #
  • @lizith @Eingang @janedavis13 @davecormier @gconole and to make it even more interesting, distance is a relative term, ehh? #phdchat #
  • Just had brunch with my closest friend from college who is here visiting his sister. Nice that all people seem to pass through NYC. #
  • @dugganjr @OpenUPEducation @DrAshCasey @Kerileef @VGoodyear I sensed discontent with current policies but few strategies to move forward. #
  • @kiwicito No, I use and swear by #MAXQDA #phdchat #
  • @christiepooh @savasavasava Say no to what? #
  • @savasavasava Thanks! It was quite a bit different. Well worth it, though. #
  • @ben_spigel Perhaps I will try that. Wondering if I should just wait for an iP#d 3, as I have the original one. #
  • @ben_spigel Seems there are various ones. Have you used one? #
  • @JaneBozarth I also really like the small bookstores and energy in all of them. #
  • @JaneBozarth Got it. I think I like the energy in Covent Garden and Soho, along with the feel of Knightsbridge and Bloomsbury. #
  • Is there any way in the official Twitter app to mark Tweets as being read? #
  • @JaneBozarth What do you like most about London? #
  • @sarahthesheepu What conference? #
  • @lizgloyn Thanks! All safe and sound (for now at least). #
  • @ben_spigel As I asked other people about this, how do you handle typing, such as long emails? The iP#d onscreen keyboard is a bit bulky. #
  • @dugganjr @OpenUPEducation @DrAshCasey @Kerileef @VGoodyear Did you find any concrete suggestions on how to do that? #BERA2011 #phdchat #
  • @TheTarosophist Happy to! Is there a forum for this, or otherwise some specific time when you need or want it? Happy with the responses? #
  • @lindathestar How do you handle typing? I tend to do large spurts of Tweets, and cannot figure how to replicate that with the iP#d. #
  • @lindathestar @kiwicito Agreed. #MAXQDA is much less expensive for a student license. They are more friendly, shall we say. #
  • @heatherdavis Do you do a lot of typing with it? #
  • @kiwicito Seems to be working fine now; nothing but problems with its remembering me when I close the program and log back on. #
  • @gconole Your hospitality is fantastic. Drinks and dinner on me when you are here next. #
  • @gconole Thanks; got home very late, but then a full night sleep and I feel great. #
  • @lmockford That is only browser-based, right? #
  • Trying #TweetDeck one last time for today, #
  • @gconole If you are blushing at that, I will say nothing about your fantastic cooking! @aeratcliffe #
  • @NancyWhite Wow, I like your new avatar, too! #
  • @qui_oui I like your new avatar. #
  • After more problems with #TweetDeck than I can count, uninstalled and reinstalled it. Let' see how that works. Hmm, still not sending Tweets #
  • Starting the morning rather early with laundry and cleaning up from the trip. I really like arriving late and then having a full night sleep #
  • What a change from London; the police outside Newark Airport not only carry handguns (always did) but one has a big rifle over his shoulder. #
  • Just arrived safely and 30 minutes early (thanks Virgin Atlantic!) Into Newark Airport. #
